Union Settlement recruits and trains local older adults to tutor and mentor children in grades K-3 who need help developing reading and writing skills. Through an award-winning approach developed by the OASIS Institute, tutors and East Harlem students work together throughout the school year to build the children’s reading skills, self-esteem, and positive attitudes towards learning.

The Union Settlement Rising Stars Afterschool Program provides students with a safe, engaging, and supportive environment where they can learn, grow, and thrive after school. In addition to enrichment activities, Union Settlement is committed to supporting literacy and academic success through specialized tutoring and mentoring programs.

Through an award-winning approach developed by the OASIS Institute, tutors work one-on-one with East Harlem students throughout the school year to strengthen reading skills, build self-esteem, and foster positive attitudes toward learning.
